Our History
In 2011, Engaged Leaders cofounder Juan Cangas and founding board members Susan Mayberger and Eric Goodell had a powerful realization – Many newly arrived refugee and immigrant students in the Omaha community were struggling to find their place in school, feeling like outsiders. They knew that these students deserved a supportive environment where they could grow and connect with others, so they launched the THRIVE Club, an after-school program that would empower these students to develop their leadership skills and feel included.
This club quickly became a huge success, impacting the lives of thousands of students and bringing hope to those who may have felt overlooked or isolated.
In 2022, Juan and cofounder Silvester Juanes realized that the need for serving immigrant and refugee students had grown significantly. That's why they founded Engaged Leaders, Inc. - a reflection of their unwavering commitment to helping young people thrive and creating a positive impact in their community.
